![]() ![]() Jesus is proud of his room and his job, but Juan only sees them as disappointing. ![]() The hotel was described as stained, soiled, and smelly (151). Jesus was to live in a cheap hotel while he worked in the cannery. To Jesus, Stockton is his future and his hopes are large enough to shield him from the 'skid row' section of town. Stockton is shown to be a working town where Juan had lived before. Jesus, Juan's son, got his first job in a cannery called Flotill. At first the story is set in Stockton in the San Joaquin Valley. The settings vary from a small village in Mexico to the Sierra Nevada in California. The settings are described realistically they affect Juan and Jesus in personal ways. 'Sanchez' is told in many different settings, which are all unique and represent various feelings that Dokey portrays to his readers. ![]() Sanchez Written by Richard Dokey The short story 'Sanchez,' written by Richard Dokey, is a story about Juan Sanchez and his family. Juan responded bysaying, “No, I am beyond disappointment. Jesus questioned his father asking him if he was disappointed in him. When Jesus went to take Juan to see the Cannery he said no. When Jesus gives his father a tour of the Cannery Juan acts very uninterested and, -1-in a way, hurt. AllJesus had to do was look at his fathers face to know that he was displeased. In an attempt to make his father happy he said, “I will notstay much in the room, it is only for sleep. Jesus could tellthat his father was not pleased. When Jesus and Juan get tothe place were Jesus is going to stay he finds out that it is a cheap hotel. Jesus seems veryinterested in the money, a feeling that Juan knows very well. He tells him of the great aluminum buildings, the marvelousmachines, and the belts of cans that never stopped running (151). When Sanches drives Jesus to the Flotill Cannery Jesus anxiously begins to tell his fatherof how great the Cannery is. Juan is depressed because his son has become exactly what he did not want. It is evident that Juan is depressed over his son’s situation. As if that were not enough Juan’s wife dies during the labor of hisonly son, Jesus.Īfter all of Juan’s pain and suffering all that he lives for is for his son togrow up and be a good hard working man like him, but his son becomes Americanized andJuan Sanches becomes very depressed over his son’s situation, but Juan is also depressedbecause of his own situation and the life that he has led. He goes from witnessing one of his children be stillborn, to having his unborn son tornfrom his wife’s womb. Juan Sanches has a really hard and challenging life.
